Our Legacy

Who We Are & Why We Exist

The Daughters of Mary is a missionary congregation founded in India in 1938, called to live the Gospel, maintain a life of prayer, and proclaim the Word of God through life itself.

We exist to bring the love of Christ into the world. Our founders saw a world in need of love, faith, hope, and compassionate service. From that vision, the Congregation was born – to proclaim the Gospel by serving those who are poor, marginalized or in need of care.

"Every act of love, every moment of prayer, every service rendered, is a step toward building the kingdom of God on Earth."

Our Charism

Proclaiming the Divine Word and Christian unity through life in prayer, simplicity, and humble service to the marginalized.

Today, the Congregation has over 1,000 sisters in 158 houses, serving in 36 dioceses across India and internationally.

The Journey

Our History & Milestones

From humble beginnings in Tamil Nadu to a global mission of faith and compassion.

The Daughters of Mary were founded in 1938 in Marthandam, India, by Rev. Msgr. Joseph Kuzhinjalil, with the blessing of Archbishop Mar Ivanios and the approval of Pope Pius XI.

The first members—Mother Mary Kallarackal, Sister Agnes, and Sister Theresa—dedicated themselves to a life of faith, service, and missionary zeal. Their courage and devotion laid the foundation for a congregation committed to proclaiming the Gospel and serving those in need, especially women and children through home visits.

Vocations: Discerning God's Call

A vocation is a personal invitation from God to live out His love in a unique and profound way.

Our primary vocation is as children of God, and within that, some are called to religious consecration—a profound response to God's commitment. Discerning a vocation involves openness, prayer, and reflection.
